She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 31 of 1970. She grew up in the suburbs of Merrick, New York, on Long Island and studied piano under the renowned classical pianist Morton Estrin.Gibson began writing and producing her own music before she made it to the Billboard Hot 100. When she was fourteen, her demo tape was discovered in the possession of a well-known radio personality. She shared the tape with an executive at Atlantic Records, and her original song "Only in My Dreams," led to her securing a development contract immediately. She began a promotional tour to promote her music in venues throughout the United States. The majority of 1986 was spent and 1987 constructing her songwriting catalogue as she continued to tour venues. Debbie's mom would accompany her on her club dates. She continued her studies at Calhoun High School, Merrick, New York, simultaneously. Later, she graduated as an honors student.
